Ahead of the inaugural Melbourne Web Series Festival on 20 July, we’re profiling all 30 series that made the Official Selection list. Next up is Mission Backup Earth created by Alex Pfander.

Filmed in two locations, Berlin and Triton, Mission Backup Earth is a science fiction space series set in the 22nd century and deals with the human struggle to survive a cosmic catastrophe.

In the near future, a cosmic catastrophe hits us without warning. Unforeseen by scientists, the Sun transforms rapidly into a red giant. Having no choice, Mankind desperately tries to escape the solar system. The survivors become space nomads, seeking a viable replacement for Earth.

The Mission Backup Earth team is very excited to be filming their next 12 new episodes for the series.

What inspired your series?

30 years of watching sci fi movies and a lot off research about the current developments in astronomy, spaceflight and science.

Why should people watch your series?

If you like spacesuits, moons, rockets and all the space related sci-fi stuff then this could become your series.

What do you want people to take away from your series?

We hope to entertain the audience and make them think about the theory off space colonization and long term survival in the future.

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production?

The live action shoots are challenging because they cost money. Even though this whole show is done by volunteers, we have to pay for costumes, equipment, studio time and so on. Especially getting realistic props and costumes with nearly no money at hand is a huge challenge!

How do you reach your audience?

So far we are running on several Web TV Channels and an App channel for smart phones. The series will be also screened on a local (berlin) cable access TV Channel in late autumn.

Why make a web series?

It´s a new fascinating genre, it gives indy producers the possibilty to show it to the audience without undergoing a selection process off a TV Channel and the short running times makes it’s production feasible without a big budget!
