Accessibility at MWF

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][image_with_animation image_url=”2910″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

We have many reasons for which to be proud here at Melbourne WebFest this year. Firstly, we are screening some truly awesome quality content. Secondly, we are lucky enough to host some of the most talented web series creators in the  world. But thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, our festival is accessible to people from all walks of life, cultural backgrounds and abilities.

One of the most wonderful things about the world wide web is its unique ability to unite a large and multidimensional audience. To mirror this sense of solidarity in the digital world, we believe everyone should have the ability to enjoy web series’ at our festival and we take immense pride in integrating this ethos throughout our program.

Opening Night (which features keynote addresses from Nick Boshier and the Van Vuuren Bros, the launch of the TreeCircle platform & the premiere of 3×3 The Immersive Fiction in Australia and the screening of special annual program Melbourne WebFest Presents), will be Auslan interpreted so that Melbourne’s Deaf community can get in on the action.

Official Selection Screenings in the Comedy category on Saturday 11 July and Drama category on Sunday 12 July will also be Auslan interpreted and screened with Open Captions.

In addition, all events in our program will be fully wheelchair accessible – including screenings, workshops and panels at all venues.

For those interested in digital accessibility, our very own Simone Flanagan is hosting a workshop on Industry Development Day (Friday 10 July), “How to Make Your Work Accessible: Connecting With Audiences of All Abilities.” This is a must-see event for aspiring web series creators and creative producers interested in making their content more inclusive to a broader range of viewers.

Festival patrons further interested in accessibility in the world of web entertainment simply cannot miss‘Gettin’ Down’ (pictured above), an incredible web series from the U.S. that gained entry into this year’s Official Selection by direct selection from LAWEBFEST. the series follows the lives of people with Downs Syndrome. In an exclusive interview with us, series creator Dennis Curry spoke about how educating the message of acceptance is.

Ethics aside, the more accessible the industry is to a wide range of individuals, the more exposure to our work and subsequent resilience in our market. For example, with almost 1 in 5 Australians experiencing some form of hearing loss, creators who caption their content are seizing the opportunity to connect with a bigger and more diverse audience.

Any questions or concerns relating to accessibility which may not have been addressed here or elsewhere on our website, please let us know info@melbournewebfest.com
