The Agent is a heart-warming Australian comedy about hope, reinvention and mistaken identity. The 5 part series was released May this year and was entirely self funded by creator Daniel Krige and stars Carla Bonner (of NEIGHBOURS fame) as an aspiring actress looking to find herself an acting agent.
What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome making this series?
I had written, directed and performed in my own projects before, but adding the producer’s hat to the mix was the biggest learning curve for me. Crossing all the T’s and dotting all the i’s in terms of legalities etc. That was the biggest challenge.
Coming from a showbiz background do the kinds of experiences and characters seen in The Agent actually exist?
While the story of a Tax Agent becoming an acting agent is completely fictional, the other characters were inspired by real people. And I’m sure there are many actresses out there who can confirm that Jo’s experience with Steve Starr isn’t purely the stuff of fiction.
Is your series an ongoing project? If so can you give us some clues about what comes next?
If the series finds an audience, there’ll definitely be a Season 2, and it will focus around Graeme, Jo and Shelly, but it will also feature Steve Starr. How could it not?
What is your favourite thing about making web series?
It’s quicker than making a feature.
Have you achieved the goals you set for this series?
It’s made some people laugh, so the answer would be yes. I just hope it finds a wider audience and makes more people laugh.
What’s your background as a content creator? And how did you approach this project differently to previous projects?
I’ve directed a couple of features and numerous shorts. The Agent is my first foray into the world of web series. I approached it the same as I would approach anything: get the script right. As the saying goes: If it ain’t on the page, it ain’t on the stage.
