9:30AM – 11AM | Sunday 21 July
RMIT University, Melbourne CBD |
Blackbox (12.02.103)
Note: Only valid to Creator Pass holders.
Talia Raso, from Dead on Sounds, will be running this extremely important presentation not to be missed by any filmmaker. Location sound can be tricky, from airplanes, to trucks, to noisy crew. Learn how to get the best possible recording.
Talia will be educating you on how to choose the right microphone for the scene. You’ll learn how to capture great ambient sound and how to make sure you get everything you’ll need for your post sound mix.
She’ll teach you the difference between bad boom operating and good boom operators, and why you should never rely on the onboard microphones.
Great sound makes your project shine, found out how to do it with Talia Raso.
???????? Here’s what you’ll learn
- The different microphones used for different types of scenes.
- All the assets you’ll need to make your post-sound design a breeze.
- The most effective way to capture great dialogue.
- Why location sound is so important.
????Who’s the speaker: Talia Raso
Talia Raso is an audio professional, enthralled by the effects of audio-visual cohesion in multi-sensory experiences. She has been working in audio engineering and production capacities since 2012. In 2017 she completed a Bachelor of Design at RMIT, majoring in Sound Design and the psychophysiological effects of multi-sensory Experiences. Mentored by award winning sound designers Adam Hunt and Ryan Granger, she has worked on feature and short films, animations, virtual reality games and corporate campaigns for Suncorp, Breville, Dulux, Optus, and T2 to name a few.
WORKSHOP: Alternative Funding Methods
w/ OzFlix
11:30AM – 1PM | Friday 19 July
RMIT University, Melbourne CBD |
Session Room One (10.02.62)
Note: Only valid to Creator Pass holders.
The Alternate Funding Workshop is a short variation of Ozflix CEO Ron Brown’s ‘How To Finance Your Indie’ Masterclasses, and is based on his maxim that ‘a screen funding agency application is not a finance plan.’ The workshop will cover the many ways that indie filmmakers will secure the necessary resources to make their film under their own control. Brown has produced more than 1500 pieces of screen content from TVC’s to feature films. Aimed at any production under the Producer Offset threshold of $500K, it provides inspiration and practical advice on raising cash, in-kind participation, sponsorship/product placement and barter.
???????? Here’s what you’ll learn
- Many different ways that films can be resourced
- Techniques for approaching investors, both those you know and strangers
- Techniques for approaching corporations
- The relationship between marketers/brands and filmmakers
- The value equation in sponsorship & product placement

WORKSHOP: puppet making w/ tina matthews
Part One: 11AM – 12:30PM | Thursday 18 July
RMIT University, Melbourne CBD |
Session Room One (10.02.62)
Part Two: 1:30 – 3PM | Thursday 18 July
RMIT University, Melbourne CBD |
Session Room One (10.02.62)
Note: Only valid to Creator Pass holders. 30 spots available. You will also be expected to attend both sessions.
Puppetry is one of the oldest performing arts and has roots all over the world. In Japan, the bunraku tradition evolved out of rites practiced in Shinto temples. The Vietnamese created the unique practice of water puppetry, in which wooden puppets appear to walk in waist-high water. The Iliad and The Odyssey were presented using puppetry, and in medieval Italy, marionettes were used in the production of morality plays by the church. Puppets have a long, rich history, and despite it all, they’ve stood the test of time, entertaining audiences to this day.
Film and television have used puppets practically since their inception, though in many cases puppets are now replaced by CGI, to varying levels of success.
Puppetry itself is a complicated art that combines performance and technical skill with craftsmanship and humor, Master Puppeteer Bob Flanagan told Playbill magazine. A puppet’s movements are a kind of expressive shorthand, he said; “even the slightest hand gesture, or a tilt of the head, can speak volumes that actors can’t always communicate.”
It’s those gestures and movements that define what puppetry is; movement is the essential attribute of any puppet and it’s what brings them to life.
In this two-part workshop, Matthews will demonstrate how to use household materials to construct a puppet that moves in multiple directions. The principles learned in this workshop can be applied to any puppet- whether it be hand or rod puppets, marionettes, animatronic & mechanical puppets or more complex puppets for stage and television.
