There’s only ONE DAY until we officially kick off this year’s festival! But remember, on Thursday night at 6pm we’ll be hosting an uber cool early mixer event, Spotlight on Melbourne at Loop Bar in the city. We’ll be screening some fantastic local web series, which although are not nominated for any awards this year, have been chosen especially by our festival board to feature in the Spotlight event. Consumption of sweet content aside, this is truly a beaut opportunity for networking and, best of all it’s FREE!
Last week we gave a comprehensive overview of our Official Selection series in the Animation and Comedy, Non-Fiction and Suspense/Thriller & Sci-Fi/Fantasy genres, to be screened for you all this Saturday. On Sunday, the festival continues at Deakin Edge, Fed Square, with our Drama screening block kicking off at 11am, and Comedy, at 3:15pm. It’s always good to end on a laughing note. Besides, it’s vital you’re in high spirits for our reputably raucous Gala Awards and After Party.
Drama
The quality of drama on the web from around the world astounded us this year. At 11:00am on Sunday, we’ll be screening some seriously amazing stuff from Italy, Canada, France and Australia. Please note this block will be Auslan interpreted and screened with open captions.
Starting with home-grown Aussie talent, we’re excited to present Altruman, the poignant tale of a superhero who excels at fighting crime, but struggles to navigate life matters closer to home, namely his family, relationships and career. Supported by a crowdfunding campaign in its early life, the series grew from a 2009 short film into a top-notch production that has received funding from Screen Australia, and access to the ABC iView platform last year.
We’re also stoked to screen Season 2 of SYD2030, our favourite university drama of sex, parties, status and ambition, and Starting From Now, an intense piece of storytelling and visual exploration of forbidden attraction. Those who like their drama injected with a healthy dose of comic absurdity should look out for the highly anticipated Neighbours vs. Zombies, a weirdly lovable mash-up that combines our favourite TV soap with zombie horror tropes.
Once again, Canada brought the awesomeness, with four drama series in our Official Selection this year. Féminin/Féminin sensitively explores the complexities and nuances of love between women while ten-part internet dramedy Whatever, Linda joins the dots between cunning, attractive secretaries and Wall Street Ponzi schemes.
Evocative and subversive portrayals of gender seems to be a trend here, with the cautionary series set on a desert island, The Banks, inviting viewers to contemplate the consequences of hyper masculine bravado. Lastly, Canada gives us Michaëlle en Sacrament, a bittersweet excavation of how Alzheimer’s can change a family.
The incredible collaborative effort from Italy, Kisses and Guns, invited participation from film makers around the world to mix together a narrative set in the heady worlds of gangland romance and teenage angst. Finishing on France,
Discrépance tells the story of four friends in their 20’s who together take a vacation at a family cottage, and in the meantime rediscover who they are and what they mean to each other.
Relax for a lunch break at 1:15pm. The awesome thing about Fed Square is all the food about, so rest assured your nomnom needs will be met. At 2:00pm there’s the much-anticipated Millions Are Watching panel which goes for an hour and is a must-see for aspiring web content producers.
Comedy
Our Comedy screenings commence at 3:15pm. From doing the numbers last year, it’s safe to say this is once again arguably going to end up our most popular screening session, so get in early to avoid missing a seat!
It wasn’t easy this year sifting through one hilarious web series after another in choosing the Best Comedy for our Official Selection, but our panel eventually nailed it down to a select clever few who got it right.
Our friendly New Zealander neighbours gave us a laugh with High Road: Season 2, the story of an old rock-star trading in his adrenaline-powered ways for a quiet life in a seaside town community, but the rest of our series in this screening block are Australian-produced.
If you’re into food, friendship and funny women then you can’t miss The Katering Show, a hearty romp around the world of modern food trends, diets and intolerances. Intolerance as a theme doesn’t stop at food, with the screening of Season 2 of I Luv U But, a story of two gay Lebanese-Australians married to each other to maintain a straight façade in the face of community judgement, and the incredibly popularHow To Talk Australians, a parody web series about an Indian call centre training college that teaches how to converse with authentic Australian offensiveness. It’s fantastically outrageous.
Relationships can be tenuous and at times difficult, but more often than not they are a constant source of comedy. At least for some of our web series creators, the secret and silly worlds shared by couples provided plenty of inspiration. The Record is a black, observational comedy about couples who strive to achieve or maintain a world record, in order to be remembered, together, in the history books, whileBedHead explores the tension a man feels when his old female friend decides to share his bed while she’s over for the weekend.
Sketch comedy lovers will delight in the sassy and snappy In a Woman’s World, a contemplation of women as the dominant sex, while footy lovers (possibly everyone in Melbourne?) will get a kick out ofFour Quarters, a comedy series set against the guts and glory of the AFL world. That is, as long as they don’t take their footy too seriously!
Those who loved Noirhouse in last year’s edition of MWF will be pleased to see that Season 2 of the modern-day suburban noir once again made it onto our Official Selection, as did the lovable co-dependent pair in their second season of Chris & Josh.
Remember to glam up for our Gala Awards Night at 7pm, which will also be held at Deakin Edge and hosted by Melbourne’s zaniest comedy trio, Aunty Donna! At 10pm we’ll nick off to The Grill at Beer Deluxe for one hell of an After Party, and to celebrate the end of another wildly successful Melbourne WebFest.
As spacious and gorgeous a venue Deakin Edge is, the space does fill up quickly and tickets are limited. If you still are yet to secure your tickets, please don’t leave it to the last minute as we don’t want to disappoint! Grab a few for you and your mates here.
