2013 Official Selection: 8.13

Ahead of the inaugural Melbourne Web Series Festival on 20 July, we’re profiling all 30 series that made the Official Selection list. Next up is 8.13, created by Traycee King.

Filmed in Los Angeles, 8.13 follows three different groups of people, three different points of views, from the beginning of the zombie apocalypse in Los Angeles and little chance of survival.  While the groups struggle to keep alive, we find that they’re not as different as they seem.  Their lives intertwine with each other; unfolding with the story.  They quickly learn that while the zombies are a threat, the real threat comes not from the dead, but from themselves.

Creator Traycee King says her inspiration for the series was: “When the webseries phenomenon hit with barely any horror content available, I came up with the idea for 8.13. I’m also a horror fanatic.”

And, as for what she wants viewers to take away from the series: “In life, there are no main characters.”

 

 

What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome in production?

We had a 3-4 person crew working on a micro (x -3) budget.  We sometimes had to work with 50 actors and extras. We had to make that budget stretch.

How do you reach your audience?

We relied heavily on social media & social media sweethearts with larger followings (ie. people with podcasts, blogs, etc.).

Is it an ongoing project? If so, can you give us some clues about what comes next?

Aw, sorry. This is not an ongoing project. When I first started the series, I knew it would have an ending.

Why make a web series?  

It’s the quickest & easiest way to reach an audience.
